Lapporten

August 16, 2010

This mountain feature dominates the area of Abisko in northern Sweden. So the story goes, or so I was told, it gets the name from being the gate of the lapps. A kilometer or so through the birch forest, just on the treeline, is a solitary rock called Paddus. This rock is where the Saami people sacrifice reindeer, and once killed the souls of the reindeer fly off, through the U shape of Lapporten.

Paddus also wound up with a bit of a reputation for being very difficult to get down off, although it’s pretty easy to climb it. I’m not sure if this is connected or not.
